Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is a federal institution of the Government of Canada responsible for safeguarding and managing Canadian fisheries and oceans resources with a mandate to ensure healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystem through aquatic habitat protection and sound science. DFO also supports economic growth in the marine and fisheries sectors as well as innovation in areas such as aquaculture and biotechnology. Freshwater and marine science programs, products and services respond to demands for scientific information and advice driven by the priorities identified by clients mostly through the Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat. Among several centre of expertise across Canada, the DFO Gulf Region’s National Centre for Effectiveness science is developing the science needed to understand the effectiveness of regulatory and non-regulatory measures implemented to protect fish and fish habitat. As a multi-partner research, the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre (ASEC) links communities and scientists involved in coastal and estuarine research. DFO Gulf Region Science Branch is currently collaborating with the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon along several lines of marine sciences.
