The Institute of Marine Science of the Spanish National Research Council (ICM-CSIC) is the largest institute dedicated to marine research in Spain. Under the motto “Ocean Science for a Healthy Planet,” it conducts frontier research and foster both knowledge and technology transfer on topics related to ocean and climate interactions, conservation and sustainable use of marine life and ecosystems, and impact mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards. In-depth knowledge, determined action, and coordinated management are essential to confronting these global challenges, thereby driving sustainable development of humankind. ICM-CSIC leads and participates in key international, European and national projects and initiatives (e.g., the EU projects VECTORS, Discardless, SafeNET, Merces, FutureMares, Triatlas, Ges4Seas,) that address ocean challenges. ICM-CSIC expertise relevant to MarinePlan includes the leading role that it plays in the development and application of Marine Ecosystem Models and the analysis of cumulative impacts using integrated analysis, including statistical and mechanistic spatial-temporal models, geographic information system technologies and novel machine learning, iEcology and citizen science techniques.
